R&D: Flowing Electricity

R&D on how to create a high resolution dynamic, evolving electricity effect.

The setup consists of one 4K RGB texture where two detailed patterns of electric arcs are packed in channels R and G.
A secondary "flow" texture is created for both patterns. Inside the flow texture, the R channel consist of a gradient stretching over the evolution of the arcs. The G channel consists of offset information so that the timing of individual acts can vary throughout the evolution.

A custom function is to "scan" the position of the texture evolution. This gives the appearance of a moving, evolving electric arc.
This position is then driven by normalized particle age.

Effect result - UE4
Applied to the mysterious "Generators" found deep in the forbidden Chernobyl zone.

Demonstration of the "scan" effect that can be controlled in various ways to create the appearance of evolving electric arcs.

Example of one of the "flow" textures. The R channel provides a gradient stretching over the whole evolution, and the G channel provides the offset information between individual arcs.
